SURVEILLANCE

The Republic of China: commonly known as ‘the world’s factory’. Despite only being the third-largest country in the world, it is home to the largest population- both of people and security cameras, as 200 million of them watch the streets of China. Large portions of the land are sparse, while few remain overcrowded; this despite the historic law condemning all families to pertain to one child only. This one-child policy was lifted in 2015 causing an influx in pregnancies, and immediately increasing the nations’ population.

This rule change is mainly due to the protests that have occurred over decades addressing many communist social issues. More recently the citizens of China, specifically the financial highlight which is Hong Kong, have tried to tackle near-total surveillance. By 2020, China planned to complete facial recognition and further surveillance network implementations, which spy on all urban residents in every fashion (including their TVs) and unifies those databases across the country.

Many speculate that the social climate over the last few years led to a recent unfolding of events. Dr. Charles Lieber, the Harvard Chairman of Biology and Chemistry, was arrested in January for lying about 1.5 million dollars in funds from the Wuhan University of Technology as well as links to the Chinese government and scientists sent overseas. It is not certain that the political disturbances have led to this occurring of events. Yet currently, most reports and articles on the topic will assure that there is no direct link or correlation and that statements otherwise are simply ridiculous. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has not released decisive information on the matter, and bioterrorism and warfare very well exist although often censored or propagandized in the mainstream media. China actively blocks any news of protests, censoring search results and hacking several communication platforms, both there and in the United States. One thing is for certain- the use of devices like Alexa, our phone, or even just Wi-Fi allows our data to be sold to larger groups searching for profit out of the public eye.
